[:en]“Santa Claus isn’t coming this year,” said Marcos Gonzalez to his kids along with his wife, with tears in his eyes.
To their three youngest he explained that “due to a mistake we didn’t put the letter for Santa Claus in the mail and now it is too late to send it. We’re sorry, but Santa definitely isn’t going to visit this year.”
The reality was that a few days before that Mr. Gonzalez had lost the money he had saved for house expenses and Christmas shopping. It was money he had saved with the help of his wife.
Marcos’ employer was also his landlord, and after working hard for him for five years, he felt he could ask him for a few extra days to pay rent, which he agreed to. Marcos was told he would also receive a Christmas bonus from his employer which he assumed could help him make ends meet. However, things didn’t happen as he expected.
“My boss had told me he would give me some extra days to pay rent, but he didn’t. He collected the rent money from my Christmas bonus…,” said Marcos, who didn’t know what to do.
Their relatives who they considered might be able to help refused to do so, morally and financially. And to make things worse, they were notified that all utilities would be shut down if they didn’t pay $650 owed.
Maria de Lourdes, the oldest of the kids, was always aware of the real situation. And even though she understood it, she was still very sad.
“What is going in, Maria? Why are you so distracted?” asked the teacher to Marcos’ oldest daughter, which prompted her to explain her family’s situation.
“The utility bill was due and so was rent. On top of that, dad didn’t have any money for Christmas. I’m very sad,” said Maria’s teacher.
This Latino home certainly felt even colder than the rest of the already cold city of Omaha.
But then, something wonderful happened.
Marcos received a call from school: “Please come to school, we have something very special for you.”
The next day, with a bit of suspicion and wariness, Maria’s father showed up at school. It surprised him to receive good news instead of bad news: he got an envelope with $250 in gift cards for a store so that they could buy groceries.
Marcos Gonzalez happily returned home to tell his wife about what had happened: they now had a way to buy food.
“At one point I started to lose my faith in God, thinking he had forgotten us,” said Carlos.
On that same day, he went to his employer’s office for another surprise. It turns out the secretaries gave him a check for $150, another for $100 and one more for $75. It was money from their own pocket which they were giving him to help.
The most amazing thing was the help of a stranger who was there on the day when Marcos’ boss had told him he would have no Christmas bonus. “That person gave me a check for $650 and said it was a gift from him and his family. I didn’t know what to say or do, but I did realize that with that money I was going to be able to pay the utility bills.”
And just like that, all debt was paid and there was food in their pantry. However, in the eyes of the little ones, Santa Claus wouldn’t be able to visit this year because it was two days before Christmas and the tree looked sad without any presents.
And then, in the winter cold, a lady knocked on the door and asked for Marcos Gonzalez. Once he stood before her, she said: “Come, there is something for you in the truck, please come closer,” while she showed him a big black bag that contained wrapped boxes – they were the Christmas presents they were missing.
“Don’t go anywhere because there are more things for you,” she said while she opened the doors to her car which contained more bags with more boxes.
“God is real,” he said as he walked into his house with tears in his eyes. “The most amazing thing is that with all the emotions from such a gesture we didn’t even know who that woman was, but we thank her from the bottom of our hearts.”
This happened for Christmas 2016, and it is something they will never forget.
In fact, 2017 has been better for the Gonzalez, which is why they have decided to pay it forward by donating to the pantry of “Latinas Unidas” at the Nebraska Medical Center.
We must highlight that there are currently many people in the community in great need, be that a neighbor, a friend or a relative – people who think that Santa Claus won’t be visiting their homes. This is why every Christmas we all should give a gift to those in need.

A los 3 más pequeños les explicó que “por un descuido no pusimos la carta para Santa Claus en el correo y ahora ya no hay tiempo de que la mandemos. Disculpen hijos, pero definitivamente no llegará Santa este año”.
La realidad era que días antes el señor González había perdido el dinero que tenía guardado para gastos de la casa y para compras navideñas. Era dinero que duramente había juntado con la ayuda de su esposa.
Por otro lado, el patrón de Marcos era también su casero y, después de trabajarle tenazmente por 5 años, sintió la confianza de pedirle unos días extras para pagar la renta y acepto. Se le dijo que también recibiría de manos de su jefe un aguinaldo de Navidad supuso que con dicho dinero podría salir de apuros. Sin embargo, su plan se vino abajo.
“Mi jefe me había dicho que me daría unos días extras para pagarle la renta pero no lo hizo. Se la cobro quitándome el aguinaldo…”, dijo Marcos compungidos sin saber qué hacer.
Los familiares en los que pensaron para pedir una ayuda les dieron la espalda. moral y económicamente. Y para empeorar la situación, les llego una notificación indicando que los servicios serían cortados si no se pagaban 650 dólares.
María de Lourdes, la mayor de los hijos, supo en todo momento la situación real. Y aun que asimilo la noticia, estaba inmersa en una enorme tristeza.
“Qué te pasa María, por qué estas tan distraída?” preguntó una maestra a la hija mayor de Marcos, logrando así que la joven le explicara la triste situación familiar.
“El pago de los servicios están atrasados y también la renta. Además, mi papá no tiene dinero para que hagamos algo en Navidad. Me siento muy triste”, dijo María a su profesora.
Definitivamente, el frío que imperaba en la ciudad de Omaha era más helado de lo que marcaban los termómetros, en el interior de este hogar hispano.
Entonces, algo maravilloso sucedió.
Marcos recibió otra llamada escolar y con insistencia le decían: “Por favor, venga a la escuela, tenemos algo muy especial para usted”.
Al día siguiente y con un poco de recelo y desconfianza se presentó el papá de María en la escuela. Sorpresivamente, lo que recibió no fueron malas noticias sino un sobre que en su interior tenía 250 dólares en tarjetas canjeables de una tienda departamental. Era para comprar alimentos.
Feliz, Marcos González regreso a casa para platicarle a su esposa lo ocurrido. Ya había para comprar comida.
“En algún momento comencé a perder la fe en Dios pensando que ya nos había olvidado pero no era así”, decía emocionado Carlos.
Ese mismo día fue a la oficina de su empleador, donde lo aguardaba otra sorpresa. Resulta que las secretarias le entregaron un cheque de 150, otro de 100 y uno más de 75 dólares. Era dinero de su propio bolsillo, del cual se desprendían para auxiliarlo.
Lo más increíble fue la ayuda de una persona extraña que había estado presente cuando días antes el patrón de Marcos le negaba el aguinaldo. “Esa persona me entrego un cheque por 650 dólares diciendo que era un regalo de parte suya y de su familia. Yo no supe que decir o hacer, pero si pensé que con ese dinero tendría lo suficiente para realizar el pago de mis servicios”.
Así, las deudas estaban cubiertas y había comida en la despensa. Sin embargo, a los ojos de los pequeños, Santa Claus no llegaría por qué dos días antes de Navidad el árbol estaba triste y sin ningún regalo.
Entonces, con el frio invernal una dama desconocida tocó a la puerta y preguntó por Marcos González. Y al tenerlo frente a ella le dijo: “Ven, hay algo para ti en la camioneta, por favor acércate”, al tiempo que le mostraba una gran bolsa negra, cuyo contenido eran cajas envueltas. Eran los regalos de Navidad que hacia tanta falta.
“No te vayas por qué aun hay más para ti”, le dijo la señora, al tiempo que abría las otras puertas de su carro mostrando más bolsas con igual contenido.
“Dios si existe”, dije al entrar llorando a mi casa. Y lo más increíble de todo es que con los nervios y la emoción no supimos quién era esa mujer que nos había llevado los regalos. Sin embargo, agradecemos infinitamente su buen corazón.
Esto ocurrió la Navidad del 2016 y ha sido una vivencia que jamás olvidarán.
De hecho, en este 2017 la suerte ha sonreído más a los González, razón por la cual han querido corresponder a la ayuda que recibieron, realizando una donación de despensas al grupo “Latinas Unidad” del Centro Médico de Nebraska.
De esta forma, deseamos subrayar que actualmente existe mucha gente con grandes carencias en la comunidad, ya sea un vecino, un amigo o familiar. Personas que piensan que Santa Claus no entrará en su hogar. Por ello, en esta Navidad regálese y regale un detalle a esa persona necesitada.
