[:en]It’s Friday night and Oscar Gonzalez, better known as DJ Chocheman, is getting ready to start a live mix for Lobo 97.7 FM at the Tequila Night Club (3050 L St.).
He arrived at said club “by chance,” but it was thanks to this that he managed to become part of the team of radio announcers for the Spanish- language radio station (11128 John Galt Blvd).
“It was back in 2008 when I worked for Midwest Sound & Lighting that owner Abraham Juarez called me, so I helped out as a technician with a software he had bought at the store,” said the radio announcer.
After that, when there was no available DJ, the entrepreneur asked him to help him provide some entertainment for the night: “I accepted because I knew a lot about music due to my experience as the drummer for Zahoma and I was aware of the songs that were getting more radio play. And just like that, I began to work several nights each week, and Abraham became a great friend of mine.”
Gonzalez was used to taking the stage along with his band mates at Zahoma, but this was a completely different experience: “I began to play drums when I was 13 years old, but my mother obviously didn’t let me go to any of the dances to work. I never took any classes, and I played by mimicking others playing. I loved it, and since I was a bit chubby people said I looked like Choche (R.I.P.), the drummer of Bronco, so I began to call myself DJ Choche.”
Many years later, Gonzalez met radio announcer Edgar Monsivais, “El Cachorro,” Programming Director at Lobo 97.7 who suggested he change his name to Chocheman “to avoid any copyright issues.”
He continued: “He was the one who ‘christened’ me, and he also became my mentor, asking me to workonlivemixedontheradio,havingmyown space for doing mixes from Monday to Friday, from1to4p.m.,”emphasizedGonzalez,whotook his own turntable to the studio and first got on the air on September 2, 2016.
“I was very nervous during that first week,” said Gonzalez. “I was pushing the wrong buttons, and I made some mistakes, but I always tried to give it my best effort and people liked that. I get along very well with our radio listeners because I try to help them to have a good time, and Cachorro has been a great teacher from whom I’ve learned a lot.”
After quitting his 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. job at a factory to fully focus on his radio career, Gonzalez has more time to prepare the music genres he’ll showcase, reviewing all commercials to make sure they’re in the right order and producing informational segments for his show: “Every day I try to provide information on local news, and I talk about interesting topics with a fun twist, in the style of the Anonymous YouTube Channel.”
The Lobo 97.7FM audience communicates with DJ Chocheman through social media and by the text message hotline: “I work during a very tough slot to cover since people are at the end of their workday and I have to cheer them up. I’m very happy to know that we get calls from Lincoln and other areas in Nebraska and Iowa.”
Gonzalez considers that Lobo 97.7 has become one of the public’s favorite radio stations because “it is the Spanish language pioneer in Omaha and it has always been very versatile, so people always have something to listen.”
Always faithful to Grupera music and classics such as Liberacion and Bryndis, Gonzalez considers that “music played in the Chihuahua style with an accordion” is getting a big push in that part of the United States.
As the eldest of the five sons of Maria Garza, who arrived from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, to be able to provide a better life for her family, Gonzalez is well aware of what it means to fight to overcome any obstacles: “Because of this I want to tell young people to always give it their best effort, especially at school. They should never surrender because anything is possible. I’ve lived through it all, and now my dreams have become true.”

Es noche de viernes y Óscar González, mejor conocido como DJ Chocheman, se prepara para iniciar
el live mix de Lobo 97.7 FM desde el Tequila Night Club (3050 L St.).
Su llegada a dicho centro de espectáculos se dio “por casualidad”, pero fue gracias a ello que ingresó al equipo de locutores de la radio en español (11128 John Galt Blvd).
“Fue en el año 2008 cuando trabajaba para Midwest Sound & Lighting que el propietario del lugar, Abraham Juárez, me llamó para ayudarle como técnico, con el software que compró en la tienda”, relató el locutor.
Tiempo después, cuando no había un DJ disponible, el empresario le pidió que lo ayudara a amenizar la noche: “Acepté porque sabía de música por mi experiencia como baterista con el grupo Zahoma y conocía lo que sonaba más en la radio. Y sin esperármelo, comencé a trabajar varias noches a la semana y Abraham se convirtió en un buen amigo.”
González estaba acostumbrado a pisar los escenarios acompañado por sus compañeros de Zahoma, pero esta oportunidad era completamente diferente: “Empecé a tocar la batería antes de los 13 años pero obviamente mi mamá no me dejaba ir a los bailes a trabajar. Nunca tomé clases, lo hacía por imitación, pero me encantaba y como estaba gordito la gente decía que me parecía a Choche (q.e.p.d.), el baterista del grupo Bronco y así comenzaron a identificarme, como DJ Choche.”
Años después, González entró en contacto con el locutor Edgar Monsiváis “El Cachorro”, Director de Programación de Lobo 97.7 quien le sugirió cambiar su nombre a Chocheman, “para evitar cuestiones de derechos de autor.”
“Él me ‘bautizó’ y también se convirtió en mi mentor porque me invitó a entrar en la radio haciendo live mix en vivo, es decir, mis propias mezclas de lunes a viernes de 1 a 4 de la tarde”, enfatizó González quien llevó su tornamesa al estudio y salió al aire por primera vez el 2 de septiembre del 2016.
“La primera semana estuve muy nervioso – recordó González -, presionaba los botones incorrectos y cometí algunos errores pero siempre trato dar lo mejor y eso le gustó a la gente. Me llevo bien con los radioescuchas porque trato de hacer un cotorreo diferente con ellos y Cachorro ha sido un maestro del cual he aprendido muchísimo.”
Renunciando al empleo que tenía en una fábrica de 10pm a 6am, para concentrarse de lleno en su carrera radiofónica, González prepara con anticipación los géneros que va a tocar, revisa que los comerciales estén en orden y produce segmentos informativos para su programa: “Diariamente trato de informar sobre noticias locales y hablar de temas interesantes de una forma un tanto cómica, al estilo del canal de YouTube Anonymous”.
El público de Lobo 97.7FM se comunica con DJ Chocheman por medio de las redes sociales y principalmente a través de la línea de textos: “Me toca cubrir un espacio difícil porque la gente está saliendo del trabajo pero yo tengo que animarlos. Me da mucha alegría saber que nos llaman desde Lincoln y muchas otras partes de Nebraska y Iowa”.
El posicionamiento de Lobo 97.7 en el gusto del público González se lo atribuye a que “es la estación pionera en español en Omaha y siempre ha sido muy versátil, en todo momento tiene algo que la gente quiere escuchar”.
Fiel al género de música grupera y a clásicos como Liberación y Bryndis, González consideró
que “la música interpretada al estilo de Chihuahua que incluye el uso del acordeón”, está sonando bastante en esta parte de los Estados Unidos.
Como el mayor de cinco hijos de la señora María Garza quien llegó de Reynosa, Tamaulipas para sacar adelante a su familia, González sabe muy bien lo que significa luchar sobreponiéndose a cualquier limitación: “Por eso les recuerdo a los jóvenes que siempre le echen ganas, sobre todo al estudio. Que no se rindan, que todo puede ser posible. Yo mismo lo he vivido ya que muchos sueños se me han hecho realidad”.
Y quizás solo faltaría lograr uno más… el tocar al lado de su baterista preferido, ¡Alex González de Maná!.
