My name is Yuriko Doku. I am originally from Barranquilla, Colombia. I am also third generation (“sansei”) of Japanese descent. I have been living in Omaha for about 14 years. I am married to German Ortiz and have a 7 year-old son, Santiago. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universidad de la Costa (formerly known as Corporación Universitaria de la Costa) in Colombia and my second undergraduate degree is in International Studies with a minor in International Business and Management from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
I currently work as the Project Coordinator at the UNO’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS). I have been very fortunate to work there for the last 12 years holding different positions. I have worked as student worker, research assistant and graduate assistant. I have also had the opportunity to assist our faculty in research projects by conducting interviews and analyzing data from the US Census.
This academic year, 2017-2018 started a new chapter of OLLAS’ leadership with the hiring of Dr. Cristian Doña-Reveco as its new director. Our center is an interdisciplinary program that offers a major in Latino/Latin American Studies (LLS) and a minor in Chicano/Latino Studies (CLS). We are excited to announce that in the upcoming fall 2018, we will be offering four new academic programs. Two more minors, one in Latino/Latin American Studies and the other in Migration Studies and two Graduate Certificates, one in Latino/Latin American Studies and the other in Migration Studies. Having the OLLAS credential has been crucial for our alumni’s success. We are very proud to see our alumni working in different fields, such as immigration law, nonprofits, federal and state government, education and pursuing Masters and PhDs.
During these years, I have been able to support many young Latino students as they complete their college career, many taking advantage of the scholarships, internships and study abroad opportunities offered by OLLAS. I have been fortunate enough to see them grow and to establish themselves as the professionals they are today. OLLAS has also collaborated with other UNO offices in order to assist prospective Latino students wishing to pursue higher education.
Personally, OLLAS has helped me grow academically and professionally. I had the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics while working as a graduate assistant. Today, I am pursuing an additional Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. Working at OLLAS, has also allowed me to work with our Latino community through various research projects. Through this work, I have also been able to network and participate as a board member in different Latino nonprofit organizations. Last but not least, I think that OLLAS is a great place to work. Our strength is to work as a team in order to accomplish our goals and make sure to contribute through research to the wellbeing of our community.[:es]Ms. Yuriko Doku, M.S.

Mi nombre es Yuriko Doku y soy originaria de Barranquilla, Colombia. Yo también soy tercera generación (“sansei”) de ascendencia japonesa. Yo he vivido en Omaha durante unos 14 años. Estoy casada con Germán Ortiz y tengo un hijo de siete años de edad cuyo nombre es Santiago. Yo obtuve mi Licenciatura en Economía de la Universidad de la Costa (antes conocida Corporación Universitaria de la Costa) en Colombia y mi segundo grado es en Estudios Internacionales con un grado menor en Administración y Comercio Internacional de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha (UNO).
Actualmente trabajo como Coordinadora de Proyecto en la Oficina de Estudios Latinos/Latinoamericanos (OLLAS) de UNO. He tenido la fortuna de trabajar ahí en diversos puestos durante los últimos 12 años. Yo he laborado ahí como estudiante trabajador, asistente en investigación y asistente graduado. También tuve la oportunidad de asistir en nuestra facultad en proyectos de investigación al realizar entrevistas y analizar datos del Censo de los EE.UU.
Durante este año académico 2017-2018 comenzó una nueva etapa para el liderazgo de OLLAS con la contratación del Dr. Cristian Doña-Reveco como su nuevo director. Nuestro centro es un programa interdisciplinario que ofrece un grado en Estudios Latinos/Latinoamericanos (LLS) y un grado menor en Estudios Chicanos/Latinos (CLS). Estamos emocionados por anunciar que en el otoño de 2017 estaremos ofreciendo cuatro nuevos programas académicos. Dos son grados menores, uno en Estudios Latinos/Latinoamericanos y otra en Estudios Sobre Inmigración y dos Certificados de Grado, uno en Estudios Latinos/Latinoamericanos y otro en Estudios Sobre Inmigración. Tener el aval de OLLAS ha sido crucial para el éxito de sus alumnos. Estamos muy orgullosos en ver a nuestros alumnos trabajando en diversos campos, tales como derecho migratorio, en organizaciones sin fines de lucro, en agencias gubernamentales federales y estales, en educación, así como buscando obtener grados de Maestría y Doctorado.
Durante estos años, yo he podido apoyar a muchos jóvenes estudiantes latinos mientras completan su carrera universitaria, muchos de los cuales aprovechan las oportunidades que ofrece OLLAS de becas, internados y estudios en el extranjero. Yo he tenido la fortuna de verles crecer y establecerse como los profesionales que son hoy en día. OLLAS también ha colaborado con otras oficinas de UNO para poder ayudar a los estudiantes latinos a buscar una educación superior.
En lo personal, OLLAS me ha ayudado a crecer académica y profesionalmente. He tenido la oportunidad de buscar un grado de Maestría en Economía mientras trabajaba como graduado asistente. Hoy estoy buscando obtener otro grado de Maestría en Administración Pública con un enfoque en Administración de Organizaciones Sin Fines de Lucro. Trabajar en OLLAS también me ha permitido trabajar con nuestra comunidad latina a través de diversos proyectos de investigación. Gracias a este trabajo también he podido conectar con muchas personas y trabajar como miembro del consejo de diversas organizaciones latinas sin fines de lucro. Por último, considero que OLLAS es un gran lugar en donde trabajar. Nuestra fortaleza es trabajar como equipo para poder alcanzar nuestras metas y asegurarnos de contribuir al bienestar de nuestra comunidad a través de la investigación.[:]
